Prior to her work in the Center for Child Well-being, Ms. Fenley was the Associate Director for Communication at the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In this role, she and her staff translated complex scientific concepts and data for many audiences, including the public, press, and policy-makers. Among her achievements in the position at CDC were the development of an electronic network (VAWnet) for practitioners and researchers working in the area of violence against women and the development and management of SafeUSA, a consortium of 30 public and private organizations dedicated to raising the issue of safety on the national agenda and to promoting methods to prevent injuries. She was also responsible for the development of the SafeUSA information line and web site.
Ms. Fenley has also operated Fenley Communications, a communications company that specialized in training programs, public relations products and educational materials for private medical care groups and public health agencies. Prior to her work at CDC, Ms. Fenley was a writer/producer/director of educational television at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, where she produced programs used for medical students and residents, for public and consumer health information, and public relations. Awards that she received for her media work include a Gold Award from the 19th Chicago International Film Festival and a Grand Award from the American Association of Chambers of Commerce. She has also taught high school English and was an editor for Charles C Thomas . Publisher.
Ms. Fenley received a Bachelor of Arts in English from Illinois State University and completed graduate courses in communications with an emphasis on the adult learner from the University of Illinois at Springfield.
