There are thousands of books available for children. Many parents find this overwhelming. We suggest you think back to the books that you loved as a child. Most likely your child will also love these books, and this will be an opportunity for you to share your childhood with your child.

There are also web sites that provide lists of books appropriate for different age groups that can help you identify good books for your child. You may find it helpful to check out the following:

  • Award Winning Children's Books includes a list of award winning books for children of all ages. It also includes a description of each of the book awards.
  • Bimonthly Showcase, created by the Children's Book Council (CBC), is a bimonthly thematic bibliography available only online. Themes include poetry titles, math and counting books, folk and fairy tales, the African-American experience, humorous books, holiday titles, and more.
  • Caldecott Medal Home Page, part of the American Library Association (ALA), provides a listing of all Caldecott Medal winners from 1938 to today. The Caldecott Medal is awarded to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.
  • Children's Literature Web Guide contains a children’s literature web guide with a list of award winning children’s books and best sellers, as well as lists of notable films, recordings, computer software, and web sites for children. It also includes a link to the Association for Library Services to Children.
  • Kids Bookshelf Book Reviews contains an index of book reviews for all kinds of children's books.
  • Newbery Medal Home Page, part of the American Library Association (ALA), provides a listing of all Newbery Award winners from 1922 to 2002. The Newbery Medal is awarded to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.
  • Public Broadcasting System (PBS) has a web site devoted to books, songs, and games for you and your child. This link will take you to their "Recommended Books for Growing Minds" site, but from this page you can also link to many other fun activities you can play with your baby to encourage reading and thinking skills.
  • Reading is Fundamental has a web site filled with book suggestions for children of all ages. You can browse by age, category, author, or browse the entire collection. The web site also includes fun activities for kids and parents. Reading is Fundamental is an organization dedicated to developing and delivering children and family literacy programs.
